Advancing Trypanosoma Parasite Research Through High-Resolution and Big-Data Methodologies
Sara Silva Pereira is a parasitologist with expertise in computational, evolutionary, and infection biology.
Since 2012, across the UK, Brazil, Kenya, Portugal, and Spain, Sara has studied several aspects of trypanosomatids - unicellular parasites that can infect virtually all animals. Puzzled by their ability to survive in diverse hosts and tissue microenvironments, and to sustain infection at barely detectable parasite numbers, she focuses on understanding and disrupting their survival strategies.
She graduated from King's College London in Biomedical Sciences, with an extramural year in Biochemistry. She obtained her PhD in Veterinary Parasitology from the University of Liverpool, under the supervision of Dr Andrew Jackson. Then, she was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Figueiredo Lab in Lisbon and a visiting postdoc in the Bernabeu Lab at EMBL Barcelona. She leads a research program on parasite vascular interactions at the Católica Biomedical Research Centre since September 2023.
