Advancing Trypanosoma Parasite Research Through High-Resolution and Big-Data Methodologies

The lab adheres to SAFE (starting aware, fair, equitable) Labs policies and we are proud to be a SAFE environment. As such, we commit to a culture that prioritizes Diversity, Equity, Integrity, Welfare and Sustainability.

Diversity and Inclusion:

Science is an international endeavor and the best science comes for the sharing of different ideas and experiences. To foster a diverse and inclusive environment, we:

  • are happy to discuss cultural needs at onboarding

  • actively advertise job adverts to the global south

  • are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to accommodate caretaking responsibilities

  • maintain all lab interactions in English.

Integrity and Welfare:

We promote a lab culture where respect, collaboration, and accountability are key. All lab members are expected to behave within these three pillars, whilst upholding high standards of scientific rigor. A few examples:

  • We value and respect each other’s points of views and contributions to discussions

  • We are punctual and adhere to deadlines.

  • We actively engage in each other’s presentations.

  • Lab members are free to voice their ideas, wishes, or concerns without risking negative consequences ensuring a psychologically safe environment.

  • We do not accept offensive conduct towards any characteristic, including ethnicity, disability, sexuality, or gender.

  • Bullying and/or harassment are unacceptable in the lab and any allegations of it will be seriously considered and mitigated.

Academic science should be an exciting, rewarding, and engaging job. Certainly, it can be challenging, and stressful at times, but it should not be depressing, or life-consuming. We expect all lab members to take annual leave as established by the Portuguese National Law (22 business days + public holidays), as well as any University granted days. Occasionally, laboratory experiments require out-of-hours work. We support lab members taking time off to compensate for this within reason.

Sustainability:

Laboratories consume a lot of energy and generate a lot of resources. Whilst this is unavoidable to maintain the necessary safety and cleaning standards, we adopt strategies to reduce waste. This includes:

  • Placing orders in bulk to reduce shipments

  • Using shared equipments

  • Recycling non-hazardous waste

  • Replacing disposable plasticware with reusable glassware when possible

  • Switching off equipments when not in use

  • Reducing experimental scales to accommodate smaller volumes.
